A little bit about me!

Although the last five years have brought me  success as  a writer in terms of publication, I was finding that trying to write alongside working full time as the Head of Drama at a busy secondary school was stifling my creativity. Although I had found time to prepare the scripts of A Mother's Voice and The Last Resort for publication - which included writing research notes and preparation exercises - I produced no new scripts in that time.

And I still had the kitchen to finish!

Thus in early 2003 I decided that it was finally time to take the plunge and begin writing full time. Fortunately I had the full blessing of Katie, my wife and strongest supporter, and my two children Ellie and Lydia. So as of September 2003 I am now officially a full time freelance writer, director and theatre arts teacher.

For the previous five years I had been the Head of Drama at St Laurence School in Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire.

I  first began teaching at The Blue School in Wells in Somerset before moving on to take up the post of Head of Drama at Priory School in Weston-super-Mare where I also created Priory Youth Theatre. Subsequently I moved to London and out of teaching into the "real" theatre. I I took on the role of Senior Youth Arts Development Worker with Hillingdon council. Based at the Compass Theatre, I created another young people's theatre company - Magnetic North Youth Theatre. After a number of successful and "interesting" years in that post I moved on to run the BTEC National Diploma course at Amersham and Wycombe College of Further Education.

In those last few years in London, however, we were struggling to make ends meet with two new additions to our family in the forms of Eleanor (Ellie) and Lydia. So we made the decision to return to the South West of the UK to be near to friends and family and to live once again near Bath which we love. So it was a reluctant return to teaching at secondary level for me. "Just for three years," I said. "Then I want to give it all up and write full time. That's the deal!"

Well we are three years behind schedule but we  got here at last. Significantly poorer but significantly happier as I struggle to make a go of it full time!

I began writing in my first teaching post, when working at The Blue School, in Wells and have produced several full length plays. For secondary schools my writing includes: Jabberwocky, The Plays the Thing, Children of the Blitz, It Came from Somewhere Else and Stars in their Eyes. For youth and student companies I have written The Last Resort which has toured the west country and was performed at the Edinburgh Festival and A Mother's Voice. A Mother's Voice was first performed in 1998 by BTEC National Performing Arts Students as their final production project at Amersham and Wycombe College. A Mother's Voice was the first of my plays to be published. This was followed by The Last Resort, a year later.
